1969 Buick GS series, from the 1969 Buick brochure

Two tabulations in this record agree on the year's total Gran Sport count: 4,933 GS 350 hardtops and 7,532 GS 400s, for 12,465 combined. Over-Drive's production table further splits the GS 400 into 6,356 hardtops and 1,176 convertibles, while Wikipedia gives the same 4,933 and 7,532 figures citing Flory's American Cars 1960-1972. Over-Drive's compilation also states that the Stage 1 performance package became a factory-installed GS 400 option for 1969, with the more aggressive Stage 2 still dealer-installed, and lists both the standard and Stage 1 versions of the 400 at 340 hp.1,2

Two figures in this record's own conflict entries are genuinely disputed rather than settled. The GS 400 convertible count is given as 1,176 by Over-Drive's table but as 1,776 by TeamBuick's separate reference, a one-digit difference this record's own conflict entry shows without resolving either way. Pricing shows a similar split: a factory price sheet gives $2,963 for the GS 350, $3,164 for the GS 400 hardtop, and $3,308 for the convertible, while a separate secondary compilation gives $2,980, $3,578, and $3,722 for the same three cars, the GS 400 figures roughly $400 higher in the secondary source; this record's own conflict entry lets the factory sheet lead while noting the secondary GS 400 prices may include options rather than representing a base price. Separately, this record's own production notes state that no citable Stage 1 count was found, and that the California GS's production is folded into the Special DeLuxe coupe (43327) figure rather than broken out, since the compiler's own image caption of 3,574 for the California GS does not actually appear anywhere in that compiler's own table. All Buick intermediate production shown in the production table, across every series, totaled 167,343 for the year.1,3

The standard 400-cu-in V-8 is rated 340 hp at 5,000 rpm and 440 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm; the factory-option Stage 1 version of the same 400 carries an identical 340-hp, 440-lb-ft rating in Over-Drive's engine listing but at 11:1 compression rather than the standard engine's ratio, though this record's own identification entry separately documents a Stage 1 engine code giving 350 hp instead, a third figure this record carries alongside the other two without reconciling it into a single number. The 350-cu-in V-8, standard in the GS 350 and California GS, is rated 280 hp at 4,600 rpm and 375 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm. Three transmissions are documented: a new Turbo Hydra-Matic 350, optional on V-8s under 400 cu in including the GS 350; the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400, optional on the GS 400; and a four-speed manual, optional across the California GS, GS 350, and GS 400.1,3

A detailed factory options sheet lists dozens of order codes down to the cent, headlined by the $199.05 Stage 1 package itself (code A1, bundling the modified 400, specific ornamentation, Positive Traction, a performance axle, heavy-duty cooling, and low-restriction dual exhaust), the $157.98 California-GS-required 280-hp 350 engine (A7), and the $227.04 Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 (B2). Several codes, including tire options F2, F3, and F7, ventilation code I-2, the U1 convenience group, and the W2 molding package, carry different prices depending on whether they were ordered on the California GS, GS 350, or GS 400, reflecting how much standard equipment already varied among the three cars before any options were added.

Twenty exterior paint codes are charted, from Regal Black and Cameo Cream through Copper Mist, and ten interior trim codes are documented split evenly between the GS 350 and GS 400, covering black, blue, buckskin, parchment, and pearl on the GS 350 and black, buckskin, burgundy, parchment, and pearl on the GS 400. This record's own identification entry describes the California GS as built on the Special DeLuxe 43327 coupe body carrying GS 350 trim elements, a vinyl top with GS monograms, and California script, with its production folded into the Special DeLuxe coupe count as already noted; the factory price sheet separately lists it as model 3327, priced as that base coupe plus a required bundle of options covering the 350 engine, transmission, ride, ornamentation, and tire codes. Three engine codes are documented: RP for the 350-cu-in, 280-hp GS 350 and California GS engine, RR and RS for the 400-cu-in, 340-hp GS 400 engine, and a separate "Stage 1" code giving 400 cu in and 350 hp. The two-door bodies' wheelbase is given as 112 in and all coupes' overall length as 200.7 in; no other specifications, and no performance-test data, were found in an accessible documented source for the year.1,3

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

No Stage 1 count was found in a citable source. The California GS is counted in the Special DeLuxe coupe (43327), per Over-Drive; no separate figure is used because the compiler's caption (3,574) is not in its table.

Over-Drive's 1969 image captions disagree with its own table (e.g. 6,346 / 1,776 / 6,305) and are not used.
